Matthew 26:28 “For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”
When we hear the words The New Testament, our minds immediately associate them with one of the two great divisions of the Bible. We also associate The New Testament with the Communion Service. But, we should take a little time to consider what the words, The New Testament, actually refer to. The New Testament division of the Bible gives us the account of how our Lord effected The New Testament and The New Testament’s affect upon His people and His Church-Kingdom. The Communion Service is the ceremonial illustration of our Lord’s sacrifice; it was His sacrificial death that effected The New Testament. The word “testament” refers to a legal act in which the person making the “testament”, bindingly declares his “will”. In this case, Jesus Christ came into this world to fully and finally accomplish His Father’s “will”. Our Lord clearly declared His Father’s “will” when He said, “this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day” (John 6:39). Our Lord eternally consummated The New Testament when, just before He sacrificially gave His life on the Cross, He declared for all Eternity, “It is finished” (John 19:30); that is, in sacrificing Himself, He had fully and finally accomplished His Father’s “will”; thus, He had eternally sealed God’s Divine “testament”; for, He and He alone had “saved his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). Thus, we can now worshipfully declare, “with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing” (Revelation 5:12).
