Titus 2:12-13 “Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; 13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;”
In this world we encounter many things that can discourage us, distract us, tempt us, and harm us. Paul concisely exhorts us to “live soberly” (wisely, making Biblical choices and living by them); all the while, “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;”! Here, Paul describes living “soberly” as “denying ungodliness and worldly lusts”. Instead of focusing our attention upon “ungodliness and worldly lusts”, we are to spend our time “Looking for that blessed hope”! It is certain that our “adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (I Peter 5:8). Our “adversary” cannot possibly separate us from the “love of God” (Romans 8:39), neither can he rob us of our Eternal “inheritance” (Ephesians 1:11); but, he can surely “devour” us; that is, rob us of our joy and peace in this present life if we give in to his enticements and temptations, allowing him to make inroads into our lives. We are strengthened to avoid the “devices” (II Corinthians 2:11) and “wiles” (Ephesians 6:11) of “the devil” by spending our time “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;”! We tend to go in the direction of things that we are “Looking” at, let us be careful to spend our time on this earth “Looking for that blessed hope”!
