Matthew 1:21 “And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.”
Our Lord is named “JESUS” because God the Father sent Him into this world as a man as well as God to “save his people from their sins”! The name “JESUS” means “Jehovah Is Salvation”. In context, Jehovah is the Salvation of “his people”; for, the “angel” (Matthew 1:20) specifically told Joseph, “he shall save his people from their sins”! Furthermore, to remove any doubt that our Savior is both man and God, the “angel” also told Joseph, “they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.”! We can say, concerning the birth of our Lord, ‘a Living Sacrifice Was Born’, He was born to die for us! Our Savior, “JESUS” certified that He had saved “his people from their sins” when He declared on the Cross, just before He gave His life, “It is finished” (John 19:30); that is, He and He alone had fully and finally and eternally saved “his people from their sins”! Concerning His sacrifice, our Lord declared, “this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day” (John 6:39). Thus, Paul referred to the act that saved “his people from their sins” in the past tense when he wrote that our Lord Jesus, “hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began” (II Timothy 1:9)! So, we anxiously and joyfully look forward to that blessed day when “we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord” (I Thessalonians 4:17)! But, until then, we sing with Jim Hill, “What a day that will be …”!
