Matthew 2:2 “Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. 3 When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.”
The “shepherds” were glad, but “Herod” “and all Jerusalem” were “troubled” at the news that the “King of the Jews” “is born”. The “wise men” and the “shepherds”, being inspired of God to know the “King”, rejoiced and worshiped the “King of the Jews”; but, “Herod” and “all Jerusalem”, not being inspired, were “troubled”. The arrival of the “King of the Jews” would be a great threat to Herod’s authority and power, would be a threat to their carnal lifestyle, and would mean a great change in their behavior and attitudes. Most often, those in authority do not want to give it up, those who enjoy carnal things do not want to give them up, and those who subjugate others do not want to give up their controlling power. When we look about us, we see that people haven’t changed since the “King” was “born”. Some are Divinely inspired, and some are not. Some joyfully worship and serve the “King”, while some loath Him and His meek and humble manner and His Sovereign Power. But, whether He is loved or hated, He remains “the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords” (I Timothy 6:15)! Let us be of good courage, be strong in the Lord, and remain steadfast as we, like the faithful who came before us, “worship the King, the LORD of hosts” (Zechariah 14:16)!
