I Corinthians 13:3 “And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.”
Paul continues to emphasize that “charity” (love in action, demonstrated by word and deed) is essential to and the real mark of a Christian life. People may give away their “goods” and even endure martyrdom; but, if it is not motivated by “charity”, then it gains them “nothing”. Some may give away their “goods” and suffer great sacrifices all to gain recognition, status, or even sympathetic influence over those around them. Ultimately, such vain motives “profiteth” them “nothing”. The personal profit from real “charity” is hearing the Holy Spirit speak deep within our souls, saying “Well done, thou good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21) and to experience the joys and peacefulness of brotherly love; that is, “Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;” (Romans 12:10). Peter puts it this way, “And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.” (I Peter 4:8). Our Lord Commands, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16); “charity” is the brightest lamp on the highest hill!
