Psalm 124:2 “If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us:”
When our God-given Faith is working in our hearts and minds, we rejoice to know that if the Lord our merciful and gracious God were not “on our side, when men rose up against us”, “Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us: 4 Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul: 5 Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.” (Psalm 124:3-5)! It is certain that without our Lord’s overshadowing grace, the Lord’s Church and His Beloved Sheep would not have survived the almost perpetual assault of wicked “men” who hate God, His Gospel, His Church, and His People. But, He has and He continues to overshadow us with His Sovereign Love and Power. Even, in this present day, our “LORD” is “on our side”! As in virtually every generation that came before us, wicked folks seek to stymie[JS1] the Lord’s Church, Gospel, and People. But, just like our ancestors in Faith, let us “Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD” (Exodus 14:13)! Now, we can worshipfully declare, “Blessed be the LORD, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth. 7 Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped. 8 Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth.” (Psalm 124:6-8). In the Lord and His Promises, we “greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations” (I Peter 1:6).
