Psalms 107:25 “For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof. … 29 He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.”
The troubles of this present life are allegorized as “the stormy wind”; over which our Lord has Sovereign Power. So much so, that “he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind” and “He maketh the storm a calm”. Our Lord exercises Divine Control over “the stormy wind” according to His Holy Will, to bring about His Purpose. When the mariners were humbled before Him and began to cry out to Him, He heard them. They were “at their wits’ end. 28 Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.” (Psalm 107:27-28)! Similarly, when “Jonah” disobeyed God, “the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken” (Jonah 1:4). But, when the mariners cast “Jonah” overboard, “the sea ceased from her raging” (Jonah 1:15). Furthermore, when “Jonah” was sufficiently humbled and submissive to the Lord; He prayerfully declared, “I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.” (Jonah 2:0). Then, “the LORD spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land” (Jonah 2:10). So, what does this mean to us!? Stormy winds prune and cleanse the terrain over which it passes. Similarly, when our Lord sends “the stormy wind” into our lives, it prunes away rebellion and cleanses us of the sin of arrogance. The “stormy wind” turns our hearts and minds from our carnal will and lusts to the Lord and, like the mariners and “Jonah”, it compels us to our knees in most humble prayer. When the Lord sees that we are now willing to joyfully serve Him and “worship him in spirit and in truth.” (John 4:24), He speaks and “maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still” and “bringeth” us “unto” our “desired haven” (Psalm 107:30). Now is the time for us to spend much time on our knees in prayerful worship and cry one to another, “Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!” (Psalm 107:31).
