Psalm 123:1 “Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the LORD our God, until that he have mercy upon us.”
Because of the liberties we are blessed with in our Country, we no longer have “servants” and “masters” as described in this passage; so, this kind of servitude is foreign to us; but, it was common in Biblical times. The Psalmist is describing a loving relationship between the “servants” and “their masters” and “a maiden” and “her mistress”. In this context, the “servants” and maidens were very attentive to their “masters” and Mistresses; they would watch for every movement of their hands and eyes that would signal a service to be performed. Also, the “servants” and maidens were totally dependent upon “their masters” and Mistresses for support and provision in life; they looked “unto the hand of their masters” and mistresses for every need. In similar manner, “our eyes wait upon the LORD our God, until that he have mercy upon us”; that is, we allegorically, “look unto the hand” of “the LORD our God” to worshipfully serve Him, and we depend “upon the LORD our God” for support and provision in this life. We ought to daily read the Word of “the LORD our God” and prayerfully seek to understand His will for us. And, we ought to, with great zeal and commitment, immediately and lovingly obey and serve Him (John 14:15). Also, we are highly blessed with the sweet privilege of looking “unto the hand” of “the LORD our God” in prayer; that is, because “we have” “an high priest which” is “touched with the feeling of our infirmities” and He “was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15), we can “come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16)!
