In this context, a “fool” is a senseless person; that is, a person who does not have the sense to make godly judgments. There are a lot of fools who are highly intelligent. Those who truly believe that “There is no God” have no spiritual sense to know that God is God. The Lord gives His Children the sense to know that God is God when He gives them Spiritual Birth (John 3:1-8). This sense is described this way: “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1). Faith cannot be personally generated (John 6:44) or given by another person (Hebrews 8:11); the Lord Himself is the sole “author and finisher of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2). Those who have not been given Spiritual Birth are labeled fools; that is, they have no sense or “faith” to lovingly know God. Yet, a rational mind, even without Spiritual Birth, must conclude that there is a God. Infinity is variously defined, but it generally means that which goes on and on and never ends. Our human mind can name it, put it in a mathematical formula, give it a symbol, talk about how it is unending; but, an intelligent mind has no option but to accept the undeniable truth that without God, there is no infinity. At night I often look into the magnificent starry sky and muse about what is beyond what we can see and how far does what we can’t see go. As I ponder these things, I become overwhelmed with the sense of infinity; for, infinity itself testifies of God. Thus, all rational people must conclude that there is a God; but, without Spiritual Birth, men do “not like to retain God in their knowledge” (Romans 1:28) because He imposes both Spiritual and moral bounds upon all men! The unbelievers want no bounds; that is, they want no limits on how they satisfy their carnal lusts. Some profess that “There is no God” at all in any form. Some profess that “There is no God” that is Sovereign over the lives of men. Some profess that “There is no God” who is interested in the daily affairs of men. These unbelievers “are corrupt” because they have no sense of godliness. All their “works” are “abominable” because their motives are carnal, and they have no Spiritual foundation. But, those who have the blessed sense of God (Spiritual Birth, “faith”) can rejoice to declare, “I know that my redeemer liveth” and one blessed and holy day “I shall see” Him “for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another” (Job 19:25)! With this blessed sense (“faith”) of God, we daily declare, “I will look unto the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me.” (Micah 7:7) and we rejoice to spend our days on earth “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2)!
