Psalm 23:4 “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”
There are many good interpretations and applications of the “rod” and “staff” in this passage. In context, the “rod” and “staff” refer to the same thing; that is, the long pole that the Shepherd carried. The “rod”, “staff” had become and remains today a symbol of a shepherd leading and caring for his sheep. The overriding message to us is that, when I see “thy rod and thy staff”, I am comforted, for I know that “thou art with me”. Of course, now we cannot physically see our Lord standing nearby; but, through our God-given faith’s eyes (Hebrews 11:1; 12:2), we can clearly see Him mightily standing nearby with His “staff” in hand, watching over us, ready to rush to our aid as we “walk through the valley of the shadow of death”. When the storms of life rage about us, we can look and there He stands with “staff” in hand ready to deliver us. When the dark clouds of despair are pressing us down, we can look up and see our “good Shepherd” (John 10:11), with “staff” in hand, shining through the clouds as the “Sun of Righteousness” (Malachi 4:2) replacing our despair with His Peace. When it seems that the troubles will never quit coming and we become so terribly weary, we can look up and see our beloved “Shepherd” with “staff” in hand as He reaches down to pick us up and lovingly comfort us. When our own sin pricks and dreadfully pains our hearts, we can look up and see that gentle forgiving smile on our Good Shepherd’s face, as He stands close by with “staff” in hand. When the adversaries of God and godliness rage against us with furious hate, we can again lift up our eyes and see our “Shepherd” with “staff” in hand as He stands between us and our adversaries. — Let us prayerfully pause for a bit and gaze with awe upon our beloved Shepherd as He stands nearby with “staff” in hand.
