Psalm 42:7  “Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.

There are times when our troubles are so great that our mind whirs in confusion and in distress; one moment we think that even God has forsaken us, and then our faith tells us maybe He will help us, and then the next wave of troubles come upon us and we cry unto our Lord, “Why hast thou forgotten me?” (Psalm 42:9)!  In his very low state of mind, the Psalmist prayed, “Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts”; that is, my troubles are like many “waterspouts” all roaring out their threats of destruction, as if they are cheering each other on in their quest to overwhelm and drown me in the “deep” sea.  As if the numerous “waterspout” troubles aren’t bad enough, “all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me”; that is, while I’m fleeing the “waterspouts”, “thy waves” are washing over me and about to capsize me.  Notice that the Psalmist refers to “thy waterspouts” and “thy waves” and “thy billows”; that is, they are part of God’s Creation; thus, He has power over them, power to stop them and to turn them.  The Psalmist is crying that his troubles are great, “Yet” he knows that “the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.” (Psalm 42:8); that is, my troubles are extremely bad, but my blessed “LORD” will not forsake me, no matter how severe the “waterspouts” and “waves” and “billows” become!  In my times of distress, “I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?” (Psalm 42:8).  But, when I stand still and consider my “LORD”, I worshipfully cry aloud, “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.” (Psalm 42:11)!  The Psalmist’s “LORD” is our “LORD”, and He still commands the seas of trouble; so, let’s stand still for a moment and consider the great power and lovingkindness of our “LORD”!
