Psalms 37:14 “Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity. 2 For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb.”
There is a repetitive theme in this Psalm; there is evil in this world and then there is God! The application of this Psalm is not confined to any one generation; it is true and applicable to all faithful Children of God in all ages. The “workers of iniquity” cyclically distress and afflict the faithful Children of God; but when they do, there is always a “day of the Lord” (Isaiah 2:12) in which He comes and cuts “down” the wicked “like the grass” that is mowed down and they soon “wither as the green herb” that dies without nourishment. This has been a perpetual cycle ever sense the serpent tempted and deceived Eve (Genesis 3). So, while the “evildoers” are working out their vile “iniquity”, creating misery and anguish for the Children of God; we are to simply “take unto” ourselves “the whole armour of God, that” we “may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand” (Ephesians 6:13). This blessed “armour” includes spiritual weapons for both defensive and offensive operations in the service of our Lord. During the trying times, before the “evildoers” are “cut down like the grass”, we must not become “envious against the workers of iniquity”; that is, not get discouraged because the “evil doers” seemed to be at peace with their “iniquity” and their evil deeds seem to bring them no grief or anguish. They seem to live sumptuously and happily in the midst of their evil. But, let us never forget that the mower will certainly appear on the field one day and make short work of the “workers of iniquity”. In the meantime, let us put on the “whole armour of God” and “Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man” (Ecclesiastes 12:13) and “be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord” (I Corinthians 15:58)! That is, don’t get discouraged, keep going to Church and being active members, keep fellowship with one another, keep praying, and “be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear” (I Peter 3:15)!
