Psalms 2:1 “The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, 3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.”
“The kings of the earth set themselves … against the LORD, and against his anointed”. That is, “The kings” prepare themselves to fight “against the LORD, and against his anointed”. The subordinate kings and governors carry out the edicts of their “kings”; these subordinate “rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed”. In this context, to “take counsel together” is to come “together” and make plans for the defeat of “the LORD” and “his anointed”. The word that is translated “anointed” is also translated Messiah in other places and in the New Testament it comes to us from Hebrew, to Greek, and then to the English word Christ. Thus, to “set themselves” and to “take counsel together” denotes a systematic and organized opposition against God, against Christ, against His Church-Kingdom, and against His People. These “kings” and “rulers” like religion that glorifies themselves and moves the people to reverence them and doesn’t hinder their immoral ways and greed and lust for power. But, when the faithful Children of God give their worshipful allegiance to the Lord and reject immorality, greed, and carnal lusts; the “kings” and “rulers” feel threatened. When they feel threatened, they plan and decree, “Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us”; that is, “Let us” break the back of their faith and those things that bind them together and to the Lord! From the very beginning of this world, these ungodly “kings” and “rulers” have sought to defeat God and to glorify themselves in their wickedness. But, by the grace and mercy of our Lord, the humble and faithful Children of God, in every generation, have continued to worship and to live “in simplicity and godly sincerity” (II Corinthians 1:12). These humble saints daily “Put on the whole armour of God” (Ephesians 6:11) and remain “stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord” (I Corinthians 15:58), even in the very face of the wicked. These faithful saints are always striving to “worship” the Lord “in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24) and to stand firmly against the wicked schemes of the “kings” and “rulers”; “Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.” (Romans 11:5)!
