Psalm 57:1 “Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast.”
In a time of terrible “calamities”, the Psalmist urgently repeats his plea for mercy: “Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me”! In this context, mercy means I have nowhere else to run, I cannot defend myself, and my enemies will soon overwhelm and destroy me; so, Lord, I am pleading with Thee to do for me what I simply cannot do for myself! When we look at “these calamities” in our Country, we feel somewhat like the Psalmist. And, like the Psalmist, when we stop and prayerfully consider, by faith, we can clearly see that we have every reason to “hope”; for, our “soul trusteth in” the Lord our merciful “God”! Because of our Spiritual Birth (John 3:1-8), we know that we have a place of “refuge” “in the shadow of” His Almighty “wings”. So, let us “fear not, neither be discouraged” (Deuteronomy 1:21), let us flee to our God’s protective “wings”; there we will find a blessed “refuge, until these calamities be overpast”.
