2021-02-18 “Even when we were dead”

Ephesians 2:5  “Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

To be “dead” is to be unable to know, unable to learn, unable to believe, unable to love, unable to produce, unable to respond, unable to obtain life, etc.  So is the state of a person before they are “quickened” (made Spiritually alive) by God (Ephesians 2:1).  There is absolutely know way that a person can give, obtain, or consummate their Spiritual Life “with Christ”.  Neither can one person give Spiritual Life to another person; for, they are “dead in sins”.  Only God can make the “dead” live, either in a natural sense or in a Spiritual sense.  Those who are “dead in sins” are only motivated by the carnal things of this present world, for they are under the influence of “the prince of the power of the air” (Ephesians 2:2); thus, they have no will, no desire, and no ability to obtain Spiritual Life.  Those who are “dead in sins” even mock and scoff at those who lovingly believe and speak of such Holy Things.  Our Lord twice used the phrase “No man can” to emphasize that it is impossible for men to give themselves or even consummate their Spiritual Life (John 6:44,65).  But, the good news is that our loving and merciful and gracious God does for us what we cannot possibly do for ourselves; that is, “you hath he quickened” (Ephesians 2:1) and “God …  5  Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ” (Ephesians 2:4-5)!  Once the Lord has given us Spiritual Life, we then begin to rejoice and learn about the “heavenly places in Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2:6) and earnestly sing “I love my Savior God, because He first loved me”!
