Hebrews 4:16 “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”
The very words, “mercy” and “grace” fill the hearts of the Children of God with joy, peace, and contentment. These blessed words will bring a smile in the midst of tribulation, an amen as the storms rage, and a sense of calm when it seems that all is lost. These two words are at the core of our Eternal Relationship with God; for, He is abundantly merciful and gracious to His beloved Children. Because there are broad applications of these words in the Bible, there are many good and encouraging definitions for them. But, there is a common definition that seems to fit all applications. With respect to God’s care for His Elect, the word “mercy” is generally defined as God doing for us what we cannot possibly do for ourselves; and the word “grace” is generally defined as God doing wonderful things for us that we do not and cannot possibly deserve. It is “in the time of need” that we most rejoice to receive this blessed and holy “mercy” and “grace”; for, we have needs that we simply cannot satisfy and we dolefully understand that we do not deserve what we are asking for, neither are we worthy of those wonderful blessings that we have already received. Yet because of our God’s “great love” for us (Ephesians 2:4) and because “we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God” (Hebrews 4:14) we can “therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need”! It is at the blessed and holy “throne of grace” that we experience the warm and secure embrace of our Heavenly Father as He sends the Holy Spirit to Comfort us!
