2021-04-08 “hope … both sure and stedfast”

Hebrews 6:19  “Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;

We can sometimes become weary and discouraged and begin to lose sight of our God-given “hope”; “Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his.” (II Timothy 2:19).  The Children of God will always, no matter how tumultuous and troubling the times might become, be the Children of God under His Sovereign love and care (Romans 8:35-39).  The stormy troubles of this present life can so violently banter us about that our natural minds weaken and begin to waiver.  Being imprisoned, John the Baptist “sent two of his disciples” to ask the Lord “Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?” (Matthew 11:2-3).  The Lord “said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see:  The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.” (Matthew 11:4-5) – that is, remind John that the “anchor” holds.  Our frail natural minds may began to ask, “Is his mercy clean gone for ever? doth his promise fail for evermore?  9  Hath God forgotten to be gracious? hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies?” (Psalms 77:8-9); but, our Spiritual Minds answer, “This is my infirmity: but I will remember the years of the right hand of the most High.  11  I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy wonders of old.  12  I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings.” (Psalms 77:10-12) – the “anchor” holds.  Our natural minds may begin to ask is the “anchor of the soul” going to hold, but our Lord mercifully answers, yes the Lord you “hope” in is “both sure and stedfast”.  We are exhorted to “consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.” (Hebrews 12:3).  Knowing how weak and frail our natural minds are, Peter wrote, “I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:  2  That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:  3  Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,  4  And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.” (II Peter 3:1-4).  We are indeed living through troubling times; but, “Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.” (Psalms 27:14); for, in a time and manner pleasing to him, “The LORD will give strength unto his people; the LORD will bless his people with peace.” (Psalms 29:11)!  And finally, one blessed and holy day, we will certainly hear His voice Command, “Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world” (Matthew 25:34)!  In our natural minds, our “hope” may seem to slip loose, but the “anchor” holds fast, “both sure and stedfast”, held in place by the Sovereign Power of our Almighty God!
