Hebrews 6:20 “Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.”
A “forerunner” is one who runs ahead of all the others to prepare the way, guide in the way, to scout out the way, and in some cases to announce the arrival of the main body. In the military, the “forerunner” is said to be at the point; that is, to both guide in the way an to identify and announce threats that may be lurking in the way. Also, in olden times, when a large military unit was moving through and area without proper roads and bridges, the forerunners would go ahead of the main body to prepare the way, removing all the obstacles and making a way through rough terrain. A word of similar meaning is “firstfruits” (I Corinthians 15:20,23); which refers to Jesus Christ’s Resurrection in which His Resurrection precedes our Resurrection. While Jesus Christ is our “forerunner” in many ways, the context here is declared in our Lord’s own words: “In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.” (John 14:2)! Great volumes could be written about Christ our “forerunner”; but, it is sufficient for this brief note, to say that because Jesus Christ has risen from the dead and has entered into Heaven, one blessed and holy day, He will likewise raise His Elect from the dead and take every one of them to His Heaven to be forever with Him; thus, we “rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory” (I Peter 1:8)!
