Psalm 36:1 “The transgression of the wicked saith within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes.”
Because “God” is longsuffering, the “wicked” seem to think that they can continue in their “wicked” behavior with impunity. The “wicked” “flattereth himself in his own eyes” (Psalm 36:2); that is, he views and portrays himself as wise and powerful and highly successful because he thinks that no one will prevent him in his “wicked” ways. The “wicked” “deviseth mischief upon his bed” (Psalm 36:4); that is, he lays awake at night dreaming up new deceitful and hateful and “wicked” things to do. The “wicked” “setteth himself in a way that is not good” (Psalm 36:4); that is, his “wicked” ways are bad for those around him, for his nation, for his community, and for the Church. The “wicked” “abhorreth not evil” (Psalm 36:4); that is, he is not grieved, ashamed, or remorseful for his wickedness; contrarywise, he rejoices in his “evil” deeds. The “wicked” gleefully thrust pain and suffering upon others, in particular the Children of God. However, the Lord is not asleep, He knows all about their wickedness and there is coming a day in which God will move in His Sovereign power and the “wicked” will fall, will be “cast down”, “and shall not be able to rise” (Psalm 36:12). The Bible is clear, there is coming a day in which the “wicked” will learn that our Lord is God: “But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in thee.” (Psalms 55:23) and “The way of the LORD is strength to the upright: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.” (Proverbs 10:29)! In the meantime, let us “Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them” (Deuteronomy 31:6) and “be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord” (I Corinthians 15:58)!
