2021-06-25 “Hear the word of the LORD, ye rulers of Sodom”

Isaiah 1:9  “Hear the word of the LORD, ye rulers of Sodom; give ear unto the law of our God, ye people of Gomorrah.

Here, those who rebel against God and live in gross wickedness and immorality are referred to as “ye rulers of Sodom” and “ye people of Gomorrah”; for, their behavior was like that of “Sodom” and “Gomorrah”.  The message is both to the “rulers” and the “people”.  The “rulers” made laws that promoted wickedness and immorality and restricted the “people’s” ability to worship according to the Word of God.  The “people” were willing followers of their vain “rulers”, joyfully satisfying their carnal lusts for greed and immorality.  The “rulers” and the “people” had cast aside God and His “law” and had embraced the depravity of their neighbors’ pagan gods.  Verses eleven through fifteen illustrate God’s wrath against their façade’ worship, even telling them that when they pray, He “will not hear” (Isaiah 1:15).  He then Commands them to “put away the evil of your doings” (Isaiah 1:16) and emphasizes the consequences if they don’t (Isaiah 1:20).  Let us never forget that “whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning” (Romans 15:4)!
