Psalm 34:18 “The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
The symptoms of “a broken heart” are severe discouragement, a monumental sense of loss, a grievous feeling of disappointment, a fearful sense of confusion, a painful sense of loneliness, and an overwhelming feeling of despair and hopelessness. This miserable condition has repeatedly plagued the Children of God ever since Genesis Chapter Three. Beginning then, the devil has pursued the Children of God to tempt them and create as much pain and suffering in their lives as he possibly can. The pains of “a broken heart” come in large devastating tidal waves. Such “a broken heart” has only one healer. Family and friends can love, encourage, console, and help; and good counsellors can be a great help; but, only God can heal “a broken heart”; for, “He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.” (Psalms 147:3)! Most often, the scars from “their wounds” remain until removed by death. But, our Lord bids us to “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28). So grievous is “a broken heart” that only God can Command “Peace, be still” (Mark 4:39); and when He issues His Command, the raging pain in the heart is replaced with “a great calm” and there is a peaceful “rest”. As the Lord makes His Divine presence felt, He tenderly embraces us with His perfect love and kindness which gives us a blessed sense of peace and contentment and joy that only He can give. He lifts our heart’s mind above the pains of our “broken heart” to find perfect consolation in His Holy Presence with us. Thus, “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.” (Psalms 121:1); that is, “I will” look above my frail self to the Lord God Almighty; for, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (Psalms 46:1).
