Psalms 94:1 “O LORD God, to whom vengeance belongeth; O God, to whom vengeance belongeth, shew thyself.”
The Psalmist is praying directly to the “LORD God” Almighty, asking Him to “shew” Himself. That is let His Sovereign Omnipotent Power and Authority be seen by the Children of God to help and comfort them and by the wicked to keep them subdued in their evil designs against those who strive to live peaceful and godly lives. Previously, the Psalmist declared, “The LORD reigneth, he is clothed with majesty; the LORD is clothed with strength, wherewith he hath girded himself: the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved.” (Psalms 93:1) and “The LORD on high is mightier than the noise of many waters” (Psalms 93:4); that is, the God we worship is able to subdue all our adversaries no matter how powerful or well established they may be! In our day, we can justly pray with the Psalmist, “LORD, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked triumph?” (Psalms 94:3) and “How long shall they utter and speak hard things? and all the workers of iniquity boast themselves?” (Psalms 94:4)! But, the wicked mockingly says, “The LORD shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob regard it” (Psalms 94:7). Even as times become dreadfully difficult, the Psalmist faithfully declares, “But the LORD is my defence; and my God is the rock of my refuge. 23 And he shall bring upon them their own iniquity, and shall cut them off in their own wickedness; yea, the LORD our God shall cut them off.” (Psalms 94:22-23). The Lord exclaims it this way, “And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them?” (Luke 18:7)! Thanks be to the Lord God Almighty Who remains our merciful and gracious Savior in every Generation!
