John 11:28 “And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.”
“And when she had so said”; that is, “when she had” declared that “I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.” (John 11:27); that is, Thou art “God” in a human body; that is, the same body that died, rose again, and ascended into Heaven. This is the same declaration made by “Simon Peter” when the Lord had asked “whom say ye that I am?” (Matthew 16:15); he answered, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16). When the Lord told Nathanael, “Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.” (John 1:48); he responded, “Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.” (John 1:49). When Christ had declared, “no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father”, “From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.” (John 1:65-66). “Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? 68 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. 69 And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.” (John 6:67-69). The phrase, “Martha” “had so said” denotes a special emphasis upon the preeminent truth that “thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world”. No one can believingly develop this truth on their own, neither can any other person persuade another person to knowingly believe this blessed truth; for, the Lord told Peter, “Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 16:17). This blessed truth can only be believed by an internal act of our Heavenly “Father”. Some do not believe it and will soon simply go “back” to their former life and walk “no more” with the Lord (John 6:66). But Peter describes the joy of those who have been given this glorious belief: “Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:” (I Peter 1:8). Furthermore, those who do knowingly believe it, will joyfully even endure great tribulation, all for the pure joy of following and obeying “the Christ, the Son of the living God”, for He “hast the words of eternal life” (John 6:68)!
