John 11:29 “As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.”
When “Martha” told “Mary” that “The Master is come, and calleth for thee.” (John 11:28), “she arose quickly, and came unto him”. There were many “Jews” in their house that had come to comfort her, but the greatest Comforter of all had called for her, so “she arose quickly, and came unto him” and the “Jews” “followed her” thinking that she was going to “the grave to weep there” (John 11:30-31). “Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.” (John 11:32); that is, she knew and believed that “Jesus” had the power to heal her brother, “Lazarus”, and had He been there, He would not have allowed “Lazarus” to die. This was indeed a painful experience, but the Great Master is about to teach a lesson that is vital to our Hope. The “Jews” from the city were there and they would observe this lesson and would quickly spread it abroad. And when it was spread, some would rejoice, but some would respond with such vitriol that they would even seek the death of the Lord. To our natural minds, it is strange that some would worshipfully love the Lord while others would hatefully seek to take His life. The Lord explained this phenomena this way, “No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him” (John 6:44) and “no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father” (John 6:65); but, on the other hand, “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” (John 6:37). It is absolutely amazing that, even seeing the dead raised to life will not makes some folks believe; but, without the Spirit of God working in a person, they cannot and will not believe even if such a miracle is performed right before their eyes. But, those who have been endowed by God with this blessed “faith” (Hebrews 11:1; 12:2) greatly rejoice, for they have an Almighty Compassionate Comforter!
