Titus 3:9 “But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.”
In some of my recent studies I’ve encountered several passages of Scripture where the dates and timing of events seem quite confusing, especially if the emphasis of the study is on precision chronology and timing. Some historians and commentators reorder events and even dismiss some events in order to establish their own desired chronology and to fix Biblical events onto our current calendar system. This is a trap that is easy for inquisitive minds to fall into, but Paul makes it clear that they do little more than “gender strifes” (II Timothy 2:23). The hours we’ve spent making calendars and charts would have been better spent trying to prayerfully understand and apply the Lord’s message to us. Instead of causing “strife”, “Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.” (Romans 14:19); that is, preach, teach, and fellowship in the sweet Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ!
