Philippians 2:9 “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
Anyone can be brutish and abusive; but, our Lord demonstrated that true power and majesty; gloriously presents itself with meekness and humility. The Son Of God was “found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross” (Philippians 2:8), “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name”. There are numerous names and titles recorded for our Lord in the Word of God, and it is not clear which name is being referred to here. However, we do know that God, through his angel, gave our Lord the name “Jesus”: “… the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. 21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:20-21). The name “Jesus” originates from the Hebrew words “Joshua or Jehoshua”, meaning “Jehovah is Salvation”. Other men were given this name, and some even have it today. But, only This Man is “highly exalted” as “Jehovah”, “The Existing One”; that is, The One that Exists without respect to time or place or limits of power or constraints of authority. God Himself explained His name “Jehovah” as “I AM THAT I AM” (Exodus 3:14). So majestically great is this Holy Name, “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord”. In my military career, when a senior officer entered the room, everyone in the room was immediately called to attention, and remained at attention unto given the command ‘At Ease’ or ‘As You Were’. If such respect and honor can be given to men, how much greater honor and respect should we give to the Great “I AM”. So great is this Blessed Name, that when it is first spoken, it would be fitting that a great hush would settle over the room, and the sounds of shuffling would be heard as every knee is bowed and then when it is spoken again all would sing aloud, “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.” (Revelation 4:11)! Such should be our worshipful praise as we “confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father”! O Lord, tender the hearts of thy people, that such worshipful praise will be so across our Country!
