Jeremiah 4:5 “Declare ye in Judah, and publish in Jerusalem; and say, Blow ye the trumpet in the land: cry, gather together, and say, Assemble yourselves, and let us go into the defenced cities.”
Long before we had radios, televisions, computers, and cell phones; trumpets were often used to send signals to the population. When Moses was leading the Children of Israel through the wilderness to Canaan, two Silver Trumpets were used to signal the assembly to assemble and to go forward (Numbers 10:2). In Jeremiah’s day, trumpets were blown to warn the people to “gather together” and “go into the defenced cities”. When the trumpets were blown, the “cry” went out; that is, the leaders were to shout out the message to warn the people to “Assemble” themselves and exhort them to “go into the defenced cities”. Again, in our day, wickedness and ungodliness and immorality are once again threatening the peace and liberty that the Children of God so cherish. More and more the Gospel Trumpet is being sounded and the “cry” is going out; exhorting the Children of God to “gather together” and “go into the defenced cities”. In our day, “the defenced cities” are analogous to faithful, Biblical Churches of Jesus Christ. Let us hear and take heed to the faithful Ministers who are even now sounding the Gospel Trumpet and crying aloud, exhorting the Children of God to “gather together” and “go into the” Faithful Churches of Jesus Christ. This world’s enticements are fleeting pleasures that can be stripped away in a moment. I fear that a great many have become lethargic and are not listening; for, once again “The lion is come up from his thicket, and the destroyer … is on his way; he is gone forth from his place to make thy land desolate; and thy cities shall be laid waste, without an inhabitant.” (Jeremiah 4:7)! Let us be like king David, who declared, “I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.” (Psalms 122:1). Let us never forget that “the LORD” our “God” is “a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me” (Exodus 20:5) and He “will not give” His “glory unto another” (Isaiah 48:11)! So, let us pray that our Heavenly Father will open the minds and hearts and ears of His people so that they will hear and respond to the sound of “the” Gospel “trumpet” and the “cry” of His Ministers and that they will “assemble together” to worship and serve the Lord God Almighty – there is where we will find true and lasting peace and joy!
