Hebrews 13:20 “Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, 21 Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.”
The “great shepherd of the sheep” is “our Lord Jesus”. His “sheep” are His “Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father” (I Peter 1:2); these are the same as those that God the Father “hath chosen … in” Christ Jesus “before the foundation of the world” (Ephesians 1:4). And, our Lord rendered them “holy and without blame before him in love” (Ephesians 1:4) when He Sacrificed Himself on the Cross. Throughout the Word of God, our Lord appears Shepherding His “sheep”; guiding them through life’s numerous troubles and perils, nourishing them with His precious Gospel and with His Holy Presence with them, and protecting them from the constant barrage of wickedness from the antichrists (I John 2:18). He was on scene to lead “Joseph like a flock” (Psalms 80:1). King David called Him “my shepherd” (Psalms 23:1). Even in our day, our Lord is our “good Shepherd” (John 10:11), always loving and caring for His sheep. “And when” our Shepherd, “the chief Shepherd shall appear” we “shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away” (I Peter 5:4). When He appears, His sheep will hear Him Command, “Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world” (Matthew 25:34). Then, we “shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord” (I Thessalonians 4:17). Let us greatly rejoice for, day by day, He is still “the Shepherd and Bishop of” our “souls” (I Peter 2:25)!
