Psalms 78:3 “Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.”
Although, not fully understood until the Lord had opened their understanding in the New Testament period; generation after generation, their “fathers” had “told” them of the coming Messiah and of His Blessed Kingdom. Isaiah prophesied of it this way, “And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the LORD; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation.” (Isaiah 25:9). When the New Testament period opened, there was anticipation of our Lord’s coming. Even the Samaritan woman said, “I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things” (John 4:25); but, she didn’t recognize Him until He spoke and told her who He is (John 4:26). Many, especially the leadership, expected him to arrive with great fanfare and carnal demonstrations of royal glory. And, when they were told that it was Him, they tried to defame Him, and they outright rejected him because he didn’t fit their self-righteous mold. Thus, we are told that “He came unto his own, and his own received him not.” (John 1:11). But like the Samaritan, there were great multitudes in Jerusalem that not only “heard”, but knew Him and so wonderfully rejoiced in His coming that “the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest” (Matthew 21:9). I can only imagine what majestic joy those people experienced on that day; for, they were seeing their Lord, Master, King, and Savior right before them! His Disciples cried such glorious things as, “And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.” (John 6:69)! Now, the Christ, “Whom having not seen,” we “love; in whom, though now” we “see him not, yet believing,” we “rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:” (I Peter 1:8)! Let us often take a few moments in our busy day and look upon Him with our God-given eyes of faith and sweetly rejoice in His presence with us!
