Isaiah 53:3  “Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

Much like a deadly disease that has many awful symptoms, sin may seem harmless and even carnally pleasant for a time, but like a cancer, if not found and treated early, it will begin to sorely afflict us and it will eventually destroy us in this present life.  But because of our Lord’s “great love wherewith he loved us” (Ephesians 2:4), He “hath borne our griefs” (our sin-sick disease) away from us; thus, eternally healing us from the sin-disease.  This sin-disease is like some awful contagion that began with Adam when he disobeyed God and “did eat” (Genesis 3:6) that which God had Commanded him not to eat.  This first great sin-contagion infected all of Adam’s posterity (Romans 5:12); furthermore, we “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).  But, out of the great abundance of our Lord’s Grace and Mercy, He “hath borne our griefs” away from us.  Much like the “goat” which, in the Old Testament times, was “presented alive before the LORD, to make an atonement with him, and” then let “go for a scapegoat into the wilderness” (Leviticus 16:10); that is, to bear their sins so far away from them that they could not ever be returned to the people; thus, symbolically and prophetically rendering them perfectly just and righteous before God.  Now, because our beloved Lord Jesus Christ “hath” eternally “borne our griefs” (sin’s contagion) away from us, He is both our High Priest and our Sacrifice; Who offered Himself to take away our sin.  Thus, in bearing our sin away from us, He grotesquely suffered and endured our sin’s “griefs”.   Now we greatly rejoice; for, “we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15).  Furthermore, our Lord is our Great “physician” (Jeremiah 8:22) and, by His Sacrificial Death, he has Eternally healed all His people of sin’s contagion.
