Isaiah 53:5 “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”
The message of this passage is so magnificent that I feel helplessly unworthy to adequately expound upon it; for, no matter how great my efforts might be, I can never entirely express its fullness. The fundamental message is that we “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God”, but everyone of our Lord’s Children have been “justified [saved to Eternal Heaven] freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Romans 3:24); in simple language, we are all sinners, but He alone hath saved us! The word that is translated “wounded” (‘chalal’) means to be ‘polluted or defiled’ and to ‘bore through or pierce’. It captures the truth that “Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many” (Hebrews 9:28) and “one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side” (John 19:34). As the sins of Israel were symbolically placed upon the “scapegoat” and it was taken so far away into the “wilderness” that it could never return with their sins (Leviticus 16:8-26); so, in fulfillment of the prophecy, our Lord actually did take our sins upon Himself (II Corinthians 5:21) and actually did “bear” them so far away that we cannot ever be Eternally Charged with them (Romans 8:33). The word that is translated “transgressions” (‘pesha’) signifies that our “sin” (disobedience of His Commandments) is actually an act of rebellion against our Lord Jesus Christ, Who so lovingly and willingly Sacrificed Himself to Eternally remove our sins from us; thus, rendering us Just before our Heavenly Father! Such knowledge moves us to cry aloud, “What shall I render unto the LORD for all his benefits toward me?” (Psalms 116:12)!
