Isaiah 53:5 “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”
The Lord issues “chastisement” to correct and to set aright behaviors and relationships and attitudes. A “chastisement” is usually a very painful experience to teach us that certain behaviors and attitudes are unacceptable to God and there is a penalty for them. It is certain that, in this present life that “whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth” and “If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?” (Hebrews 12:6-7). But, this passage has to do with our “peace with God” (Romans 5:1) which was interrupted when Adam “did eat” (Genesis 3:6) the fruit that God Commanded Him to not eat: “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die” (Genesis 2:17). And Adam did die that very day to the lovely, peaceful relationship that he had enjoyed with the Lord; and by his disobedience the guilt of his sin “passed upon all men”: “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:” (Romans 5:12). But, the Gospel message declares to us, “But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.” (Romans 5:15)! Our Most Beloved Lord Jesus Christ came into this present world as a man and took upon Himself “the chastisement of our peace”; thus, Paul wrote: “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:” (Romans 5:1) and “For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; 15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;” (Ephesians 2:15). Therefore, our Lord “came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh” (Ephesians 2:17) and “… having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself …” (Colossians 1:20). Now, we greatly rejoice; for, “The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:)” (Acts 10:36) is preached to us in our day!
