Isaiah 53:5 “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”
Sin is portrayed as a deadly disease, a plague, from which man cannot heal himself. It is so deadly that, the natural man is described as being “dead in trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1; 2:5; Colossians 2:13); that is, separated from the knowledge and felt-presence of the Lord our God. We are plainly told that, “your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.” (Isaiah 59:2). But, our Most Beloved Lord Jesus Christ hath Eternally “healed” every one that God the Father “hath chosen … in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love” (Ephesians 1:4). When He “healed” His People from their sin-sick disease, He rendered them “holy and without blame” (“healed” them) “with his stripes”. The phrase, “his stripes”, signifies that those who persecuted Him, beat Him with many “stripes”; thus, the wounds were overlapping, cutting deeper and deeper into His Flesh with each blow, making His suffering indescribably severe. In the purpose of God, His Persecution and Crucifixion were judicial acts, that were necessary to satisfy the wrath of God against sin. But, our Lord’s one sacrifice of Himself, has forever “healed” His Beloved Children of their sin-disease; thus, the plague is stopped and their Eternal Home is absolutely secure!
