2024-09-02 “he opened not his mouth”

Isaiah 53:7  “He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

As sure evidence that He is the Messiah, The Christ, the Son of God, our Savior; though He could “pray to” His “Father, and he” would have “presently” given Him “more than twelve legions of angels” (Matthew 26:53) to defend Him and to utterly destroy His persecutors; “yet he opened not his mouth”.  I understand that He behaved as “sheep” that never complain about the rough treatment they sometimes receive during the shearing process; neither do they resist when they are being slaughtered for sacrifice or for food.  He came into this present world as both Man and God to “save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21) and He knew that this persecution was a part of the suffering sacrifice that He must endure in order to fulfill His purpose.  So, “he opened not his mouth”, He willingly let them carry out their cruelty upon Him.  We are told that our Beloved Savior “Jesus held his peace” (Matthew 26:63), “he answered nothing” (Matthew 27:12), “he answered him to never a word” (Matthew 27:14), and Peter tells us that “when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously” (I Peter 2:23).  He quietly endured all His maltreatment, because it was an integral part of God’s Divine Justice and because of “his great love wherewith he loved us” (Ephesians 2:4).  Our Lord’s suffering sacrifice and death were essential to satisfy God’s Justice for His People.  Isaiah also tells us that God the Father, the Righteous Judge “shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied” (Isaiah 53:11); that is, by His Suffering Sacrifice He perfectly, fully, and finally “satisfied” God’s Penal-Judgment against our sin.  Paul explains it this way, “God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8)!  Knowing this to be true, moves the Lord’s beloved Children to sing and cry aloud, “What shall I render unto the LORD for all his benefits toward me?” (Psalms 116:12)!
