2024-11-06 “who shall abide in thy tabernacle”

Psalms 15:1  “LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill2  He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.

In this Psalm, while in prayer, king David asked a declarative question; he told us a question.  He asked, “who shall abide in thy tabernacle” and “shall dwell in thy holy hill”.  Teachers will recognize these as ‘overhead questions’, meant to grab our attention and get our minds focused upon the lesson that follows.  In this passage, the “tabernacle” refers to the tent (and later the Temple) that housed the Ark of the Covenant, but it is also a practical prophecy of the New Testament Church of Jesus Christ.  And, the “holy hill” was a particular “hill” in “the land of Moriah” (Genesis 22:2); where “Solomon” built the Temple, “the house of the LORD at Jerusalem in mount Moriah” (II Chronicles 3:1).  It was in this “land of Moriah” that our Lord declared, “I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:18).  Just as He prophesied, He built His “church” with a great host of humble repenting sinners to whom He had given Spiritual Birth (John 3:1-8).  He then answers His ‘overhead questions’; telling us that those who “shall abide in” our Lord’s “tabernacle” (Church) are those “that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart”.  We should take note of his answer and apply it to our heart, and let it be a reminder that we should keep a close check on our attitudes and behaviors in our Lord’s Church and among His people.  One of our Lord’s parting Commandments was, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” (John 14:15)!.
