2024-12-19 Keep That Good Thing

II Timothy 1:14  “That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.

That good thing which was committed unto thee” is “the faith”; that is, that great body of truths concerning Jesus Christ and His Church and Kingdom.  Jude exhorts “them that are sanctified” (includes us) to “earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.” (Jude 1:1-3).  To “keep” it is to guard it to ensure that it is not altered or harmed or lost.  This Charge is given to Pastor Timothy who is to likewise teach and exhort the Church to “keep” “That good thing”.  This Charge is applicable to every Pastor and every Church in every generation.  Because, in every generation there is an ominous threat against “the faith” which is “committed” to our keeping: “For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Jude 1:4).  Timothy, and we are exhorted to rely for help upon “the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us”; for, “the Spirit of truth, … will guide you into all truth” (John 16:13).  Thus, the Apostle is instructing Timothy, the Church, and us to seek and trust in the leadership of the Holy Spirit Who always points to the truth concerning Jesus Christ (John 15:26).  May the Lord bless that when we have come to the end of our earthly service to the Lord, it can be truthfully said of us, that we “have fought a good fight,” and we “have finished” our “course,” and we “have kept the faith” (II Timothy 4:7)!
