2025-01-15 “the strength of an unicorn”

Numbers 23:22  “God brought them out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn.

Often, we come face to face with adversarial tribulations against which we have absolutely no “strength” with which to defend ourselves.  Yet, Paul declared, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” (Philippians 4:13); that is, there are no adversarial tribulation that we cannot overcome by “the strength” of our “God”.  Moses illustrates this “strength” as “the strength of an unicorn”.  In all probability, the “unicorn” was a mighty beast like the rhinoceros, who simply powered himself in any direction he chose, all his adversaries either fled away or fell in his path.  This allegory is given so that we might visualize the Almighty “strength” of “God” that is even now conveying us through this world’s devastating tribulations.  To make sure that we get the point, Moses adds, “God brought him forth out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn: he shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce them through with his arrows.” (Numbers 24:8).  The much-encouraged Psalmist wrote, “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalms 27:1) and “I will go in the strength of the Lord GOD: I will make mention of thy righteousness, even of thine only.” (Psalms 71:16)!  No matter how severe our tribulations are, and no matter how weak and frail we might perceive ourselves; let us joyfully remember, “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.” (I John 4:4)!
