Romans 5:20 “Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:”
The Doctrine Of Grace is so blessedly magnificent that it challenges our human comprehension. It is true that, in this present life, “whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth” (Hebrews 12:6) to correct our behavior and to strengthen and equip us to serve Him; but, our Eternal Relationship with God is entirely according to His Loving “grace”. Astonishingly, “by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:17). Thus, when Adam disobeyed God (“by one man’s offence”, Genesis 3:6), the penalty of that “sin” “passed upon all men, for that all have sinned” (Romans 5:12); that is, every human being was cast down under the burden of “sin”. So, because man did not have sufficient righteousness to redeem himself from the penalty of “sin”, God the Father sent His only begotten and beloved Son to Sacrifice Himself to Eternally pay the “sin” debt that man simply could not pay for himself. And, our Beloved Lord Jesus Christ willingly came into this present world and Sacrificed Himself, to do His Father’s will; as He declared, “And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.” (John 6:39). Thus, “grace did much more abound”; for, “… by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life” (Romans 5:18); that is, “all men” that God the Father “hath given” Him; those who were “chosen in him … before the foundation of the world” (Ephesians 1:4). Simply put, our God’s “grace” abounded over “sin”, thus, ever Child of God was made Fit for Eternal Heaven, in one instant, by the singular act of our Savior Jesus Christ, and He punctuated that instant when He declared “It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost” (John 19:30)! So now, we can joyfully sing, “Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me …”!
