Romans 5:5 “And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”
Our Christian “hope” rises from our God-given “faith” (Hebrews 11:1; 12:2) and is cultivated and grown as “tribulation worketh patience; 4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope”. “And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts”. The reason that we are not ashamed is “because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts”; that is, “God” has indelibly fixed His “love … in our hearts” (He put it there by His will and power). The “love of God” is put in our hearts “by the Holy Ghost”, it is “given unto us”, not offered to us, not suggested to us, but it is “given unto us” much like the parents give or pass their features and characteristics to their children. We should also note that this is not only the “love” that we feel toward “God”, but this is the “love” that “God” has toward us. “We” do “love” our “God”, but it is “because he first loved us.” (I John 4:19). My feeble mind severely limits my ability to illustrate the sweetness, the joy, and the comfort that comes from knowing “the love of God”, but those who have it also rejoice in it, binding us together in Christian Fellowship. Because we have this “love”, we are not “ashamed” to “tell” “how great things the Lord hath done for” us (Mark 5:19), we are not “ashamed” to show our love to the Lord by keeping His “commandments” (John 14:15), and while in the midst of tribulation we are not “ashamed” to proclaim “our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from” our “burning fiery furnace” (Daniel 3:17). Furthermore, if it is not God’s will to deliver us from our “burning fiery furnace”, we still will not forsake Him because “the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts” and this “love” is more precious than life itself.
