2025-05-27 “The sea is his, and he made it”

Psalms 95:3  “For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods.  4  In his hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is his also5  The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land.

The sea is” the LORD’s, “and he made it” during the creation week: “And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place … and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas” (Genesis 1:9-10).  The “sea” is often presented as a motif for fear, for it is so vast, so deep, so filled with unknowns, and so fraught with dangers.  While men can learn to benefit from it, no man can conquer it.  The sea’s Creation and Control are comforting examples of our LORD’s Sovereign Power and Authority.  Jeremiah proclaims it, using the LORD’s own words: “Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it?” (Jeremiah 5:22).  In the very midst of a life-threatening storm, the Lord “arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm” (Mark 4:39).  This is the Lord Who loves His people with a “great love” (Ephesians 2:4), is our “good shepherd” (John 10:11), He will not forsake us (Deuteronomy 4:31), and He “hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began” (II Timothy 1:9)!  Knowing such an Almighty “LORD”; we joyfully sing, “O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.” (Psalms 95:1)!  Furthermore, when the hours of dark and oppressive misery and heartbreak and tribulation are cast upon us, we are not alone; for, our “LORD” comforts us, telling us that “they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God” (Zechariah 13:9).  Let us rejoice; for, we have an Almighty “friend that sticketh closer than a brother” (Proverbs 18:24)!
