Daniel 4:35 “And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?”
Sometimes things can look awfully bleak to us because we tend to measure our success by our own natural abilities, which are limited. But, when we “stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God” (Job 37:14) and “Be still, and know that” our Lord is “God” (Psalms 46:10); we are comforted as our spiritual minds remember that our Lord “is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords” (I Timothy 6:15). When king Herod did not give God the glory, “he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost” (Acts 12:23). When Saul of Tarsus was, seemingly without any restraint, severely persecuting the Church, the Lord not only stopped his reign of terror, but in an instant, made him a highly effective Apostle (Acts 9). When the mighty king David thought that he could get away with adultery and murder, the Lord told him the “sword shall never depart from thine house” (II Samuel 12:10), and it didn’t. Pharaoh spoke the truth when he said, “I know not the LORD” (Exodus 5:2), but he soon found out who was really in charge when all the “firstborn” died, including his son (Exodus 12:29). Evil Jezebel thought that she was in charge, but she had a terminal date with a wall, horses, and dogs (I Kings 21:23; II Kings 9:33). Abimelech thought he was in charge until one night “God” said to him “Behold, thou art but a dead man” (Genesis 20:3). After Nebuchadnezzar spent some time living like an animal, he learned that he wasn’t really in charge; for he learned that “all the inhabitants of the earth” (including himself) “are reputed as nothing” and that God does whatsoever He pleases and no man can hinder Him or even question Him. It is true that, at this time, dreadful troubles and tribulations seem to be everywhere, but let’s not waste our time wringing our hands and crying woe is me; let’s keep praying and “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith” (Hebrews); for, He “is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords” and our “good shepherd” (John 10:11,14) and He is really in charge and has final power and authority over all things!
