James 1:25 “But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.”
The phrase “whoso looketh” is translated from words that mean to stoop down so as to more closely examine. There are two applicable connotations here; we ought to stoop down in prayer as we examine the Word of God and we ought to carefully and diligently search the Word of God to learn and apply the truth found in the Word. In this case, the “law” refers to our Lord’s unchangeable Doctrine of Salvation By Grace and Grace Alone; God has decreed it, and so it is eternally true and effectual. It is “the perfect law of liberty” because it perfectly, without any failure, accomplished all that God intended and decreed. It is “the … law of liberty” because, in our Lord’s sacrificial death, He fully and finally and eternally liberated His Children from “the law of sin and death” (Romans 8:2). The “perfect law of liberty” is captured in these two passages: “thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21) and “he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost” (John 19:30); that is, our Lord Jesus Christ fully, finally, and eternally saved ever one of His Elect Children, and not a single one will be eternally lost (John 6:37-39). This blessed “perfect law of liberty” is also referred to as “the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel” (Colossians 1:5). So, now is a good time to bow down and look more carefully into “the perfect law of liberty” and give thanks to our Lord for His Amazing Grace!
