Psalm 112:4 “Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness: he is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.”
In this context, “darkness” is the dreadful absence of the “light” of joy and peace. Even “the upright” (faithful Children of God) pass through periods of awful “darkness” in which there is fear, loneliness, despair, discouragement, and disappointment. Yet the blessed “upright” remain faithful to the Lord, even as this miserable “darkness” strips them of all joy and peace. The “upright” make it through these times of ominous “darkness” because they “know that” their “redeemer liveth” (Job 19:25) and that there will come a moment in which “the Sun of righteousness” “shall” “arise with healing in his wings; and” we “shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall” (Malachi 4:2); that is, when “the Sun of righteousness” arises and pushes back the bleak darkness, there will again be peace and happiness and prosperity! Our Lord “is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous”! We may endure “darkness” for a while; but, our Lord “will not leave” us “comfortless”; in a time and manner pleasing to Him, He “will come to” us (John 14:18) and lift us up with the glorious light of His Holy Presence! Better days are on the horizon!
