Psalm 84:3 “Yea, the sparrow hath found an house, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, even thine altars, O LORD of hosts, my King, and my God.”
The “sparrow” “and the swallow” are analogous to the Children of God who have “found” the “house” of “God” to be their Refuge-Home. A Home where they can raise their children, feel welcome, be at peace, and worshipfully rejoice in the awe of the “LORD of hosts” our “King” and our “God”. They continuously feed upon the sweet Gospel of our Lord and drink from the pool of Grace and Mercy. They are warmed and comforted by the feeling of God’s “great love” (Ephesians 2:4) for them and by the love of others who dwell there. They can be heard singing, “Blessed are they that dwell in thy house: they will be still praising thee.” (Psalm 84:4); that is, those who “dwell in” the Lord’s “house” have a secure and perpetual Home that lifts up the longing eyes to gaze upon the Eternal Home that is just beyond this present life. And, they continue to sing, “Blessed is the man whose strength is in thee; in whose heart are the ways of them.” (Psalm 84:5); that is, fear of carnal man and life’s tribulations fade away, for the Lord supplies their “strength” and opens their eyes to see His pleasant “ways” of living and worship. Just listen, you can hear them crying with joy as they declare in song, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.” (Psalms 23:6) and “One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.” (Psalms 27:4)!
