Hebrews 6:18 “That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:”
In a world that seems to be overwhelmed with lies, deceit, and unfaithfulness; it is comforting to know that “it” is “impossible for” our “God to lie”! Because it is “impossible for God to lie”, we can be absolutely sure that we “have a strong consolation”, that we have a peaceful “refuge” to flee to, and that there is a magnificent “hope set before us”. We can “lay hold upon the hope” that God has “set before us”; much like a drowning swimmer reaches out to “lay hold upon” a rope that is thrown to him. There are times in which we feel ourselves to be drowning in the tribulations of this present life. But, in our worst moments of all, our merciful and gracious Lord appears on the awful scenes of our lives and opens His comforting arms to give us a “refuge”, He reminds us that He will never forsake us (I Samuel 12:22), and He shows Himself to be our only real “consolation”. Furthermore, when we are made to realize “that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing” (Romans 7:18) our heart is shamefully broken; but then, in our faith’s ear, we hear our Lord’s consoling words, “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” (Isaiah 1:18).
