Hebrews 6:18 “That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:”
The most powerful, most satisfying, most pleasant, and most desirable knowledge that a person can possibly have, is the “strong consolation” that we have in Christ Jesus our Lord. To have this “consolation” is to be consoled by our Lord in times of distress, trouble, fear, pain, loneliness, hopelessness, shame, etc. We have this blessed “consolation” when our Lord sends the Holy Spirit, the “Comforter” (John 14:16) to us when nothing else in this present world can relieve us of our distress. This Holy “Comforter” comes to us and lovingly gives us inward peace and “joy unspeakable” (I Peter 1:8); when He does, a sense of peaceful calm embraces us like a warm coat on a bitterly cold day. Isaiah described it this way, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.” (Isaiah 26:3)! This blessed “consolation” is so “strong” that it wonderfully overwhelms and sooths away any trouble or distress that we may have. In times of confusion, the “Comforter” says I’ll show you the way, follow Me. When sin shames us, the “Comforter” reminds us that our Lord loves us with a “great love” (Ephesians 2:4) and has fully and finally paid our sin-debt. When the devil entices us, the “Comforter” lovingly corrects us. But, best of all the “Comforter” reminds us of our Lords sure promise, “In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.” (John 14:2)! When the Lord sends this “strong consolation”, we worshipfully declare, “O LORD, thou art my God; I will exalt thee, I will praise thy name; for thou hast done wonderful things; thy counsels of old are faithfulness and truth.” (Isaiah 25:1).
