John 12:(3)-(7) “Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment. … 7 … against the day of my burying hath she kept this.”
Mary, obviously being moved by the Holy Spirit, entreated Jesus Christ with the highest reverence. As a humble servant, she went to His Holy Feet and worshipfully entreated Him with the ultimate and most high respect, as fitting supreme royalty; she “anointed” His “feet” with “very costly” “spikenard”. In wiping “his feet with her hair”, she is most humbly declaring for all to see that ‘all my glory, what every it may be, I worshipfully lay it at the feet of my Lord and Master to worship and serve Him’. In bringing “very costly” “spikenard”, she is declaring that ‘the best I have is thine Oh Lord’. Then “the house was filled with the odour of the ointment” so that all who were present could experience the sweet joy of that Holy Moment; much like when the Church meets to worship and the Lord begins to bless the meeting, its somewhat like the “house” being “filled with the odour of the ointment”! Furthermore, the “odour of the ointment”, being upon “her hair”, would help sustain “Mary” through the awful events of the upcoming week as she recalled those precious moments at her Master’s “feet”. “Jesus” then explained that this holy anointing was prophetic, pointing to His “burying”; for, in those days they heavily anointed the deceased bodies to cover the scent of death; albeit Jesus’ body was only dead for three days. Can you imagine, living the rest of your life, reflecting and rejoicing over those few moments at the Master’s Feet!
