John 14:18 “I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.”
The Apostles were still thinking and behaving as “little children” (John 13:33) who were afraid and greatly concerned that they were to be left alone or orphaned, because their Lord was going away. So, after telling them that He would send them “another Comforter” (John 14:16), the “good shepherd” (John 10:11) tells them “I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.”; that is, “I will” also personally “come to you”, to comfort and help you in your duties, you will not be left alone. While our duties are not at the same level as the Apostles’ duties, it is much the same with us; for, the Lord, our most kind and merciful Master, assures and comforts and guides and strengthens us through His Holy Presence with us. Then, the Lord explains how this is to be: “Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.” (John 14:19); that is, you will see me after the Resurrection because I will be alive in my Resurrected Body. And, because I have the power to live after death, I have the power and will assure that after you have lived on for a while, you will live with me after death. Then, He tells them, “At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.” (John 14:20); that is, when you begin to see these things happening, you will remember and be assured and comforted by the perfect Union of the Triune God and that you are in Christ and that Christ is in you; thus, you will never be alone. He again ties these wonderful blessings to our obedience: “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.” (John 14:21). To have our Lord’s “commandments” is to have been given a Spiritual Heart, by the Lord, and to have received the Lord’s “commandments” into our Spiritual Heart by prayerfully reading the Word of God and attending worship services where the Word of God is preached and taught. Keeping the Lord’s “commandments” does not mean just having them available, it means obeying them; that is, doing them to the best of our God-given ability. Those who have the Lord’s “commandments” and obey them are those who show their love to the Lord! It is good to say, “I love the Lord” and to sing “I love my Savior, God, because He first love me; Because He shed His precious blood to set my spirit free.”; but, it really means something when we show our love to Him by being obedient to Him.
