I John 4:12 “No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. 13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.”
We are highly blessed to experience “love” with “God” “because he hath given us of his Spirit”; that is, He “hath given us” the “Spirit” that came from and is a part of “his” own “Spirit”. Said another way, “because he hath given us of his Spirit”, we have an Eternal Union with God; for, “we dwell in him, and he in us”! The “Spirit” He places within us is an Extension of Himself and He makes that Spiritual Extension eternally integral to our being; thus, it is not possible for His Children to ever be separated from Him. The effect upon us is that “we” “know … that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit”. The instant in which “God” actuates this Holy Union is called being “born again” (John 3:1-8); which is the exclusive act of “God” in which we are totally passive; He and He alone gives us Spiritual Birth. The result is that we lovingly know Him and are compelled to worship and serve Him. Furthermore, we experience that painful contrast between the Perfectly Righteous and Holy “God” and our own depraved human nature, which makes us cry “God be merciful to me a sinner” (Luke 18:13). But, because we have this Indwelling Holy Union with “God”, we greatly rejoice for we have the “fruit of the spirit” which “is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance” (Galatians 5:22-23). Great volumes could be written concerning this Holy Union with “God”; but, for this note we will simply declare that there is nothing more pleasing or comforting than the sure knowledge “that we dwell in him, and he in us”!
