2023-06-14 “witness in earth”

I John 5:8  “And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.

The “witness in earth” is that which assures us that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that He did Sacrificially “save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21) and that we are graciously and mercifully numbered with those saved.  The “water” and “blood” are an essential part of the “witness” to us (John 5:6), declaring to us that our Lord Jesus Christ has certainly washed our sins away and, by shedding His Precious “blood”, has “justified” us before God the Father.  It is the Holy “Spirit” that gives us spiritual birth (John 3:1-8), and then He “bear witness” to us that we are the Children of God; for, “as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God” (Romans 8:14) and “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:” (Romans 8:16).  Then the “Spirit” leads us to His Beloved Church, where He empowers His ministers to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and He gives us ears to hear it and rejoice in it, and He opens our eyes to see it with joy and understanding (Proverbs 20:12).  Thus, again, under the blessed sound of our Lord’s Gospel, the “Spirit” “beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God”.  And again, it is affirmed to us as we joyfully mingle with one another, feeling that we “have love one to another” (John 13:35) and being “kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another” (Romans 12:10) and rejoicing for He has given us “Grace … and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 1:7).  The “witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood” are mutually assuring, for “these three agree in one”; that is, they communicate the same message to us; just presented to us in different ways!  We are blessed with assurance; for, “at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established” (Deuteronomy 19:15).  Thus, “the matter” is “established”; Jesus Christ did “save his people from their sins”, He did give His life and Resurrect Himself for our Justification, He did ascend into Heaven, and He did promise to return and take us to be forever with Him in our Resurrected Bodies!  Oh, “What A Day That Will Be” (Jim Hill).
